Implants lengths for various clinical indications and in general have been decreasing over time. This is based on the understanding that osseointegration is a reliable biological process. Concomitantly, research has focused on comparative studies between shorter and standard-length implants. The outcomes of these long-term clinical trials resulted in recommendations to limit the use of shorter dental implants to specific clinical indications. In contrast, when applying shorter dental implants compared to more extensive bone augmentation procedures such as vertical bone augmentation in the mandible or sinus elevation in the maxilla, patients benefit including postoperative morbidity, costs, and treatment time clear favor the use of shorter dental implants. This lecture focuses on clinical indications for the use of shorter dental implants thereby also revealing their clinical limitations.

Soft tissue management around dental implants is considered a key element to limit biological complications such as peri-implant diseases as well as to improve esthetic outcomes. While autogenous grafts are considered to be the gold standard, limitations such as an increased patient morbidity and a prolonged healing time further increased the need for alternatives devices. Soft tissue substitutes, made from different origins, have been the focus of research since many years. Proven benefits (decreasing patient morbidity among others) and ease of treatment for clinicians resulted in various clinical indications where soft tissue substitutes can be considered an alternative treatment option. The workshop focuses on the clinical handling of soft tissue substitutes to enhance esthetics and the quality of the peri-implant tissue.
